Via Valdracca, per un tratto parallela a via del Rivellino e per l'altro tratto a via Boccaccio, racchiude in sé il tessuto urbano più povero, ma anche più pittoresco; interrotta ogni tanto da vicoli e stradette senza sfondo, ha il potere di ricreare ancora oggi un'atmosfera tipicamente medioevale. Anche questa via porta le tracce dell'ultimo conflitto, infatti alcune case del lato sinistro furono distrutte e non sono state ricostruite. La nuova sistemazione urbanistica ha creato due piazzette delimitate da un enorme muro di contenimento su via Valdracca. Il tratto più caratteristico della strada con l'acciottolato antico è quello che, passando all'interno della proprietà Giannozzi, si ricongiunge prima con piazza SS. Annunziata e poi con via della Rena.
La Porta al Sole è la porta principale del Castello, decorata con lo stemma Mediceo sul fronte; la denominazione deriva dall'esposizione a sud. L'apparato a sporgere della porta, impostato su due mensoloni triangolari, presenta sia davanti sia dietro tracce di dipinture e nel sottarco è ancora visibile l'orifiamma. La nicchia della parte posteriore è occlusa.
Uscendo dalla porta, costeggiamo un tratto di mura fino a ritornare in piazza SS. Annunziata.
PORTA AL SOLE
Via Valdracca, a stretch of which is parallel to Via del Rivellino and another to Via Boccaccio, encloses the poorest part of the urban texture, but also the most picturesque. Interrupted every so often by alleys and dead-end streets, it has the power even today to create a typically medieval atmosphere.
This street also bears the scars of the last world war, for some houses on the left side of the street were destroyed and never rebuilt. The new urban rehabilitation project has created little squares delineated by an enormous brick retaining wall. The most characteristic stretch of the old cobblestone street is the part that runs through the Giannozzi property and rejoins Piazza Santissima Annunziata first and then Via della Rena.
The Porta al Sole is the main gate to the Castle, decorated with the Medici arms on the front. Its name, which means the gate facing the sun, derives from its southern exposure.
The protruding part of the gate, set on two big triangular corbels, shows on both the front and the back some traces of painting. On the underside of the arch the oriflamme, i.e., the knight's standard, is still visible. The niche in the back section is closed up. Coming out of the gate, we walk along a section of the city walls until we are back in Piazza Santissima Annuziata.
