PALAZZO STIOZZI RIDOLFI
The palace alone occupies an entire block and is indubitably very evocative. This very prestigious complex is composed of a palace and two towers that overlook, respectively, Costa Alberti and Via Boccaccio. Since 1999 work has been going on to restructure the palace by dividing it into exclusive apartments.
Part of the property was given to the City to make premises for public use, including the park area lying behind the Boccaccio's House. The palace has seen various adaptations over the centuries. It has a wide brick façade facing onto Via Boccaccio and Piazza S.S. Annuziata and a sixteenth century central portal, with four windows placed symmetrically on the floor above. To the right stands a tower, with another rising at the back. The extensive park grounds stretch from the back wall to the bottom of the valley and include the ancient road skirting the walls. At first sight the crenellated façade of this evocative building gives one the distinct impression of being right in the Middle Ages. In reality this is one of the most reworked buildings in the entire historic center. At the end of the nineteenth century, the owners at that time restored the building, attempting to remove everything that had accumulated on the façade over the centuries. They had been it cleaned, removing all the signs that time had left, and tried to give a medieval touch to what was already medieval, forcing the decorative elements. In other words, they were trying to revive the medieval urban scene. Thus, for example there are merlons, which are very charming, but certainly false. And a small Gothic arched door on the façade to the left was invented, along with the two-light windows with slender marble columns, and the dragon-shaped wrought iron decorations. The thirteenth century inner courtyard is of great interest with its arcade of brick columns and tufa capitals, typical elements also found in other parts of old Certaldo. The park lies on the slopes of the Castle hill and encompasses the early street that wound around the walls and was closed in 1896. Next to the tower, on the Via Boccaccio side, are three beautiful blind Gothic arches. Given its central position on the street, this building was probably originally an open porch where the market was held, which was probably quite small, given the size of the town center. The Gothic arches show that this part of the town was built no earlier then the fourteenth century.
